TS Reunion Fest, press from AZ Republic & New Times

AZ Republic Preview

Excerpt: But the show isn’t just about saving a beloved downtown venue. JRC also is asking concertgoers to bring unneeded and unwanted clothing and backpacks to the show to donate to the Tumbleweed Center.”We thought, people get tons of extra stuff for Christmas that they either don’t want or need or it’s something that makes a thing they already have redundant,” JRC says. “Tumbleweed could really use that stuff. They provide services for homeless teens, helping them mainstream and learn trade skills. So, if you got 10 extra pairs of pants, any backpacks or household items you don’t need for Christmas, bring those items by, too, and we will make sure they get to the people who need them. ”

And from The PHX New Times, a review of the nights happenings . . .
Is the Trunk Space about to be “ovah” and out? Hardly.
Mercifully, it appears as though reports of downtown Phoenix art space and performance venue’s impending demise are prove to be mildly exaggerated, as co-owners JRC and Stephanie Carrico believe their establishment has been weathering a recent financial nightmare and will continue to exist in the coming months.
Read the whole thing here.

Additionally, if you do click the link and read these stories, I’d ask you post a comment about it the host media sites too.
You can guess there’s less and less money going to media coverage for everything, so the more response (good or bad) they get regarding a certain item , the more likely they are to fund that coverage, which means more attention to all of the downtown arts community.
Thanks!

Call for Volunteers: High School, ASU Campus, Community Colleges

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Trunk Space is looking for volunteers:

Specifically: students attending local high schools (Scottsdale, Mesa, Glendale, Chandler, Tempe, N. Phoenix, ect) as well as the area Community Colleges (all over), and all ASU Campuses.

We need people who will distribute flyers/posters for our events, and let the students know about what we do; work with your school’s Art/Music/Performance/Social Service Clubs to set up fundraisers and other happenings.

Those interested need to be reliable, check their email daily, be able/willing to come to Phoenix sometimes, and willing to learn about the local music and art community.

Volunteers get to come to shows for free, set up their own events, and learn how to organize art & music shows.

If you’re interested, write us at this address:

(Please put the name of the school you attend in the subject line)

College Times review of Sebastian Clark & Normandie

Monday, July 13th, 2009

“Sebastian Clark and Normandie Wilson
Music for Smart People
(The Whatever Project)
Grade: B+

There’s an episode of “Family Guy” where, as the family is drowning in a rising flood of water, Peter, on the verge of death, fesses up that he never liked “The Godfather.” When asked why, he says that it “insists upon itself.”

It’d be easy to say the same of the relatively unknown Sebastian Clark and Normandie Wilson’s Music For Smart People. After all, with a pretentious title like that, it is self-assuring to both the listener and the artists themselves. While what “smart people music” actually is can be debated for hours, Music For Smart People really is smart music.

Taking a cue from the great ’60s and ’70s artists of yore, Music For Smart People incorporates bluesy base lines, jazzy brass instrumentation and bellowing orchestral melodies with an underlying pop-rock sound.

Playful nuggets are riddled throughout Music For Smart People. Just when you think the album could become a bore, a whistle, scream or erratic vocal freak-out ala Modest Mouse front man Isaac Brock meets you and simultaneously punches you in the privates.”

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone on July 25th!

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

<br>”The sound of Casiotone recalls the spooky, lo-fi years of His Name Is Alive, the dark mood of later-era Tom Waits, and the melodic hyperactivity of legendary Eighties one-man outfit the Silicon Teens. Ashworth’s lyrics capture the soul of the loser in love. Woe is the guy who screws up the right opportunity to talk to the pretty girl he spies at the supermarket (“Rice Dream Girl” from Casiotone’s self-released debut, Answering Machine Music: A Brief Album in Twelve Parts).” –The Miami Times.
